Food scales are accurate but tedious. For daily life, visual guides work well enough for most people to lose weight or maintain it.

The plate method

  • Half the plate: vegetables or salad
  • One quarter: protein (fish, poultry, tofu, beans)
  • One quarter: whole grains or starchy vegetables
  • Add a thumb-sized portion of healthy fat (olive oil, nuts, avocado)

Hand portions for protein and carbs

A palm-sized serving of protein per meal is a reliable starting point for many adults. A cupped hand of cooked grains or beans is roughly one carbohydrate portion. Adjust up if you are very active or down if weight loss has stalled.

Healthy eating does not have to be perfect. MealCoach.ai and Coach Kibo help you build better meals, understand what works for your body, and stay consistent — without shame or endless calorie math.
